 It is very well known that watermelon is a very healthy fruit. The nutritious elements in watermelon can protect the body from many diseases and conditions. Some of them are asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. Researchers believe that most of the health benefits of watermelon come from its Vitamin C and Vitamin A contents. Besides these two important nutrients, watermelon also contains very good amounts of Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine, Vitamin B1 or thiamine, potassium and magnesium. All of these play important role to make watermelon a great fruit for health. 


Watermelon is a fantastic fruit for the heart.  Vitamin A (the powerful antioxidant) and Vitamin C play crucial roles to keep the heart healthy.  Beta-carotene content which comes in form Vitamin A provides exceptional heart health benefits. It reduces the chances of developing heart disease and cancer as well. Vitamin C with its powerful antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals and protect cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are responsible for the oxidization of cholesterol and oxidized cholesterol sticks to the blood vessel walls. This process narrows the artery walls and it can lead to heart attack or stroke. Therefore, by fighting and reducing the amounts of free radicals antioxidant provides an extremely important heart health benefits.

Watermelon and Lycopene

Lycopene is a natural chemical or phytochemical, a carotenoid- which is responsible for making fruits red in color. Tomatoes and watermelon contain high amounts of this carotenoid- lycopene. By inhibiting free radical damage, lycopene prevents LDL cholesterol from being oxidized. Lycopene rich fruits are excellent for the people who smoke and consume alcohol in high amounts. It’s an essential nutrient to reduce the chances of developing atherosclerosis. Other than watermelon and tomatoes, good amounts of lycopene can be found in pink grapefruit and guava.

Watermelon is a good fruit for lowering blood pressure levels. This health benefits come from potassium and magnesium. In addition, an amino acid called citrulline is also responsible for lowering blood pressure levels. Citrulline can be found in high amounts in watermelon. This amino acid produces another amino acid which is known as arginine. Arginine produces nitric oxide, and nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels and helps to reduce the blood pressure.

Overall, watermelon provides excellent heart health benefits. At the same time, it also provides health benefits related to other conditions and diseases such as diabetes, macular degeneration, impotency and kidney disorders.
