Beta-cryptoxanthin is a natural compound that can be found in plants, fruits and also in some animal foods. It is a compound of the class of carotenoids or we can say natural carotenoid pigment. More precisely it can be said that Beta-cryptoxanthin is a carotenoid of the Xanthophylls or phylloxanthins family. Other carotenoids of Xanthophylls group are lutein, zeaxanthin, neoxanthin and violaxanthin. Xanthophylls are responsible for yellow pigments in the plant, flowers and some animal foods. Beta-cryptoxanthin is provitamin A compound, that means it is converted into retinol or Vitamin A in the human body. Carotene is converted into Vitamin A in the liver. Beta-cryptoxanthin is one of the fifty carotenoids which come under the category of provitamin A.

Beta-cryptoxanthin is important for health because lack of it in the body can lead to some diseases and conditions. Beta-cryptoxanthin is a provitamin A that’s why deficiency of Beta-cryptoxanthin and other carotenoids in the body can cause Vitamin A deficiency. Beta-cryptoxanthin just like other carotenoids helps body cells from free radical damages and reduces the free radical activity.
