Vitamin B3 or Niacin Health Benefits: Why is Vitamin B3 Important?

Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, is a very important nutrient for the body. It comes under the category of Essential Nutrients, and has a great impact on the health. Vitamin B3 or niacin is an important constituent of the B complex vitamins and plays a major role in energy production. Two unique forms of Vitamin B3- nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, or NADP, are extremely important for conversion of the body's proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into usable energy. Vitamin B3 provides other crucial health benefits including heart health benefits but it is considered as a very important vitamin for general good health as well.

Vitamin B3 deficiency can be very dangerous for the health. Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6 and the amino acid tryptophan play highly important role to determine the amounts of Vitamin B3 in the body. Lack of tryptophan in the body can cause Vitamin B3 or niacin deficiency. Because the small amount of tryptophan we get in our diet (about 3%) is converted into niacin or Vitamin B3. On the other hand, this conversion of tryptophan to Vitamin B3 cannot be completed without the help of Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B6. Therefore, lack of any of these nutrients (Tryptophan, Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B6) in the body can cause Vitamin B3 or Niacin deficiency.

Many foods contain high levels of Vitamin B3 including fish, chicken, cereal, mushrooms and green leafyvegetables.
