Quercetin is flavonoid or a plant based chemical (phytochemical), which is found in some vegetables and fruits. Quercetin is beneficial for humans and promotes good health. This phytochemical is responsible for the colors of Apples and Onions. Quercetin is also an antioxidant and plays an important role as anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory. Because of its anti-histamine properties it treats and reduces the allergies. Apples and red onions are great sources of quercetin. Besides these other natural sources of quercetin are tea, berries, nuts & seeds, grapes and dark cherries. Quercetin can also be found in red wine.

Quercetin is typically found in plants as glycone or carbohydrate conjugates. Quercetin glycone conjugates include rutin and thujin. Rutin is also known as Quercetin-3-rutinoside.Thujin is also known as quercitrin, Quercetin-3-L-rhamnoside and 3-rhannosyl qurcetin. Onions contain conjugates of Quercetin and carbohydrate isorhamnetin including Quercetin-3-4’-di-o-beta glucoside, isorhamnetin-4’-o-beta glucoside and Quercetin-4’-o-beta glucoside.

Quercetin has many health benefits. It is good for the diabetic patients as it reduces the blood glucose level and improves plasma insulin levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, quercetin is good for the lung functions. Thus lowers the risk of the diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. Quercetin reduces oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol) and lowers the risk of heart disease. Quercetin is also responsible for lowering the blood pressure levels.

Quercetin is flavonoid and important nutrient for reducing the chances of developing cancer such as prostate, ovary, breast, gastric and colon cancer. People who eat more fruits and vegetables rich in quercetin have the lower risk of cancer. Quercetin is also detoxifies liver and destroys viruses. It helps to treats interstitial cystitis and chronic prostatitis as well.

Caution: Although, quercetin is considered generally safe for the health but high doses of quercetin may be harmful for the health. According to the experts, Pregnant, breastfeeding women and people with kidney disease should avoid quercetin.
